What Is Batt Insulation?
Fiberglass batts are the pink or yellow blanket-style insulation you have probably seen in home improvement stores. They come in pre-cut widths designed to fit between standard 16" or 24" on-center joists. They are inexpensive, easy to handle, and widely available.
For walls and floors in new construction, batts are a reasonable choice. For attics in South Florida — especially existing homes — they have serious limitations.
What Is Blown-In Insulation?
Blown-in insulation (also called loose-fill) is installed using a blowing machine that distributes insulation material — fiberglass or cellulose — throughout the attic space. It fills every cavity, every irregular corner, every gap around joists and obstructions.

Why Blown-In Wins in Florida Attics
Coverage is complete. Batts must be cut and fitted around every obstruction — joists, pipes, wires, blocking. Every cut edge, every gap, every compressed section is a thermal bridge. In a complex attic, batts leave dozens of small gaps that add up to significant heat gain. Blown-in fills everything.
No compression issues. Batts lose R-value when compressed. In an attic with low clearance, crossing pipes, or HVAC equipment, batts get compressed and their effective R-value drops significantly. Blown-in is not affected by compression.
Consistent depth. Achieving a uniform R-38 depth with batts across an irregular attic floor is difficult. Blown-in is installed to a measured, verified depth across the entire attic — we use depth gauges and document everything.
Better performance around air bypasses. When combined with proper air sealing (which we always do first), blown-in creates a more complete thermal and air barrier than batts can achieve.
Longevity in Florida conditions. High-density blown fiberglass is inorganic and does not absorb moisture. It holds its R-value for 20–30+ years in Florida's heat and humidity. Batts in humid attic conditions can absorb moisture, lose R-value, and in extreme cases develop mold issues.
When Batts Make Sense
Batts are appropriate for walls in new construction, where they can be installed before drywall with precise fitting. They are also used in some floor applications. For existing attics in South Florida — especially retrofit upgrades — blown-in is the superior choice in almost every case.
